Brain Brots is a walk-around island for preschoolers. You are a cute monster, and treasure chests are hidden all over. Open one and it says a letter’s sound, like “rrr” or “mmm”. Letter balloons float out, and you walk into the one that makes that sound.
There is almost nothing to read. A wrong balloon simply floats away and the sound plays again, so every chest ends with a win. Right answers dress your monster in hats, glasses, capes and sneakers, and golden chests bring new monsters to play as.
How You Play
- On a phone or tablet, tap Player 1, then tap where to walk. Tap a chest to walk over and open it, or tap the arrow at the edge of the screen to go to the next chest.
- With controllers, press any button to join, with nothing to pair. Up to four can play on one screen.
- On a computer, two people can share the keyboard: one uses WASD and Space, the other the arrow keys and Enter.
- X opens the dress-up strip and Y changes monster. B makes your monster boop and hop.
What Kids Learn
- The sound each letter makes, in lowercase, with 23 letters from m, s, a and t up to z. K, q and x are left out because their sounds are the hardest to hear on their own.
- Letters come in the same order as our phonics game munch, starting with ones that are easy to stretch out. A new letter joins once every letter so far has been found twice on the first try.

What Age Is It For?
Three to five. Kids only need to listen and walk: the game never asks them to read words.
Does It Say the Letter Names?
No. It plays only the letter’s sound, so kids connect the shape to the sound, which is what they need for reading.
Can Kids Play Together?
Yes. One to four players share the screen, and anyone can pop the right balloon from any chest.
